Buddhism
The roots of mindfulness go back to early Buddhism. Jon Kabat Zinn, Professor of Medicine, was the first to adapt the teachings from Buddha for Western culture. In 1979, he created the Mindfulness Based Stress Reduction Clinic (Massachusetts). Kabat-Zinn's original program was called the Stress Reduction and Relaxation Program. It was later renamed Mindfulness-Based Stress Reduction. While he didn't explicitly refer to Buddhism in his work, it was widely accepted as scientific.
The late nineteenth century saw Westerners become interested in Eastern philosophy. However, Western meditation was not widely accepted until the middle of the 20th century. In response to this interest, famous eastern meditation masters started to visit the West to teach their techniques to western students. As a result, many Western students traveled to Asia to learn from the most renowned masters. How was mindfulness made so widespread? By following a few key milestones, it has come a long way from its early days as a niche practice.
Hinduism
Both mindfulness and Buddhism are well-known for their meditative practices. However, Hinduism has a rich and fascinating history. Meditation, acceptance and silence are all mentioned in Hindu scripture. This ancient religion is several millennia older than Christianity and Buddhism. These practices are covered in the Bhagavadgita (its founding scripture). Buddhist meditation is based in Hinduism. Siddhartha Gautama, founder of Buddhism was born and raised in India. His education was influenced greatly by Hinduism.
The Bhagavadgita can be found in large libraries all across the United States. Buddhism embraces Hindu meditation practices in addition to its Hindu roots. The ancient Hindu scriptures the Upanishads are full of references to meditation, silence, acceptance, and forgiveness. These same principles have been promoted by many Hindu teachers. Mindfulness refers to the ability to remain calm in the present without focusing on the future or past.
Tibetan Buddhism
Late Indian Buddhism was the source of Buddhist teachings being transmitted to Tibet. Interactions among Indian traditions reached their peak during the eighth and thirteenth centuries. Invasion, institutional competition and scarcity of resources had nearly made Buddhism disappear from India by the fourteenth century. The centre of Buddhism for central Asia became Tibet and the religion spread to the neighboring nations. History, mythology, and philosophy are all part of the Tibetan Buddhist history.
Buddhist teachings typically present meditation as a means of resolving dissatisfaction regarding embodied existence. The practice involves three main phases. They start with the study and end in integration of Buddhist concepts into an individual's life. "Giving & taking" meditation involves the meditator controlling his or her breathing and their relationship to all other beings. The first stage involves the meditator being in a state where he/she experiences a connection to two contrasting realms, or the two worlds.
Western health psychology
This article examines the evolution of mindfulness and healthy psychology in North America. Both have been successful. This article examines the relationship between mindfulness and health psychology, and how it has influenced cultural understandings about health and the direction that health service provision in markets, social systems, and health care delivery. It also examines how social psychology has played a role in the history, development and evolution of health care and wellness. While these two fields have many commonalities, a number of differences remain.
Jon KabatZinn is the most important figure in the history and practice of mindfulness in West. He was introduced to meditation at MIT by a Zen missionary. He studied at Providence Zen Center and the Insight Meditation Center. He also used traditions from other cultures to influence his mindfulness teachings. Kabat-Zinn was the founder of the University of Massachusetts Medical School's Stress Reduction Center and created his famous Mindfulness-Based Stress Reduction course.
